For his 13th album, Beyond the Sun, Isaak revisits the legendary Sun Records years in Fifties rock and roll, when maverick radio producer Sam Phillips set up shop in the then musical backwater of Memphis, Tennessee, hoping to capture the real blues sound he had heard growing up in the south.What happened instead, almost miraculously within the space of a year, was that the likes of Johnny Cash, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis stepped into his tiny makeshift studio for their first foray into music, laying down records that would become the foundation of rock and roll.Isaak later spent some time in Japan as an exchange student, and it was there that he first considered a career in music.Graduating in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in English and communications, Isaak moved to San Francisco.Chris Isaak feels comfortable in an atmosphere that is open and experimental, and he has little taste for convention and tradition.He is emotionally expressive and often dramatizes his feelings by acting them out or blowing them out of proportion.’ I said: ‘If I had money, would it make a difference? “Bright girls, funny girls, gorgeous women, just some really awesome people,” he reflects.’ And she said: ‘But you don’t.’ It was funny because we couldn’t see it [the situation] from that point where we were standing in life. I thought that I had put out enough work by now that I would finally not be defined by it.I could put out a Hawaiian album [now] and people wouldn’t go, 'Chris Isaak, Hawaiian artist’.
